A Note on El Dorado County Jurisdiction

This part is the biggest source of confusion for families dealing with an El Dorado County arrest.

El Dorado County has two jail facilities:

El Dorado County Jail — Placerville Main Jail — 300 Forni Road, Placerville, CA 95667 | Tel: (530) 621-6000. Most arrests in the western and central parts of the county are booked here, including arrests in Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Diamond Springs, Georgetown, and Cool.
El Dorado County Jail — South Lake Tahoe branch — 1051 Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150 | Tel: (530) 573-3030. Arrests in the Tahoe basin are booked here rather than being transported over the mountain to Placerville.

El Dorado County Superior Court — organized into West Slope and East Slope divisions:

West Slope branches (three): Placerville Main Street (495 Main Street), Placerville Building C (2850 Fairlane Court, Suite 120), and Cameron Park (2927 Meder Road). All three handle cases from the western and central parts of the county.
East Slope branch: South Lake Tahoe (1354 Johnson Blvd.). Handles cases from the Tahoe basin.

Placerville

Placerville is a historic Gold Rush town of about 10,000 residents at the intersection of Highway 50 and Highway 49. Founded in 1848 as "Hangtown" during the peak of the California Gold Rush, it's now a working county seat with a genuinely preserved historic downtown, two branches of the El Dorado Superior Court (Main Street and Building C on Fairlane Court), and the county's main jail.

Most western and central El Dorado County arrests result in booking at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office handles most Placerville-area calls, though Placerville also has its own city police department for incidents inside city limits. Highway 50 (heavily patrolled by CHP) and Highway 49 are the main corridors where DUI, traffic-related, and other roadside arrests happen.

Our Auburn (West Slope) office is about 30 minutes northwest via Highway 49.

El Dorado Hills

El Dorado Hills is the largest community in El Dorado County — about 48,000 residents right on the Sacramento County line near Folsom Lake. Its character is different from most of the county: newer developments, family neighborhoods, a strong Sacramento-area commuter population, and the Town Center as a hub for shopping and dining.

Most El Dorado Hills arrests are handled by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and result in booking at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville — about a 25-minute drive east on Highway 50. Common charge patterns here mirror the suburban demographic: DUI (especially on Highway 50 heading home from Sacramento or Folsom), domestic-related calls, and traffic-related warrants surfacing at routine stops.

Our Auburn (West Slope) office is about 35 minutes north via Highway 49 and I-80.

Cameron Park

Cameron Park is a community of about 19,000 residents along Highway 50, just west of El Dorado Hills and adjacent to Shingle Springs. It has its own branch of the El Dorado County Superior Court at 2927 Meder Road, which handles cases from Cameron Park, Shingle Springs, and surrounding areas.

Cameron Park arrests are handled by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and result in booking at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville — about a 15-minute drive east on Highway 50.

Georgetown

Georgetown sits on the "Georgetown Divide" — the ridge between the North and Middle Forks of the American River, accessed via Highway 193. It's a historic Gold Country town of about 2,300 residents, home to the annual Founder's Day Celebration and the annual Jeep Jamboree, and known throughout the region for outdoor recreation, small-town character, and the rural Divide community.

Georgetown-area arrests are handled by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and typically result in booking at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville — about a 40-minute drive south from Georgetown via Highway 193 and Highway 49. The neighboring community of Cool (see below) sits along the same Highway 49 corridor between Georgetown and Auburn.

Cool

Cool is a small community of about 1,600 residents at the intersection of Highway 49 and Highway 193 — the crossroads between the Georgetown Divide and Auburn. It's part of the same American River canyon corridor that makes this stretch of the foothills a popular area for outdoor recreation, and it has a strong equestrian and rural community identity.

Cool arrests are handled by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and typically result in booking at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville — about a 30-minute drive southeast via Highway 49.

Our Auburn (West Slope) office is closer to Cool than Placerville is — about 15 minutes north on Highway 49.

South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe is the mountain-basin corner of El Dorado County — about 21,000 residents plus a heavy year-round tourist population. The city sits at just over 6,200 feet in elevation, split geographically from the rest of the county by Echo Summit and the Sierra crest.

Because of that separation, El Dorado County operates a branch jail in South Lake Tahoe — arrests here are booked into the SLT branch rather than being transported over the mountain to Placerville. The East Slope branch of the El Dorado Superior Court is also in South Lake Tahoe on Johnson Boulevard, handling cases originating in the Tahoe basin.

South Lake Tahoe cases often involve unique circumstances: out-of-area visitors arrested during trips, casino-adjacent incidents (Stateline is right across the border in Nevada, and jurisdictional questions can come up), and weather-related complications for families trying to travel over the mountain.
