If you have a friend or family member in jail and you'd like to bail them out, it's important that you understand how the bail process works. Review the information below and call us if you have any questions.

How Does Bail Work?

Bail is the amount of money paid to the court in order for an individual who has been arrested to be released from police custody until a future court date. A judge sets bail at an individual's arrangement hearing, establishing the amount of money that the court must receive in order to release an inmate. It's important to know that it's possible to have a friend or loved one in the Truckee area released from jailwithout posting the full bail amount.

As part of our services, the bondsmen at Frank S. Calabretta's Bail House Bail Bonds take care of posting bail on your behalf. In exchange, you are required to pay a bail bond fee, which is set by law at 10 percent of the total bail amount. This figure, known as the premium, is the amount of bail that must be paid upfront. For example, if bail is set at $20,000, the premium is $2,000. The bail agent will deliver the premium to the court while also guaranteeing to pay the bail in full if the person who has been arrested doesn't make future court appearances. After the premium has been paid, the bond agent will arrange for the release of the inmate.

Truckee

Truckee is a place rich in history with a quaint downtown that hosts charming shops and superb restaurants set in authentic historic buildings. Recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Truckee proudly retains its historic roots. Named for a Paiute Indian chief who helped guide thousands of emigrants in their westward journey through 40-mile desert. Truckee is well known for its logging, ice manufacturing, the Emigrant Trail, as well as for the tragic expedition of the Donner Party. You can discover much more about their captivating story at Donner Memorial State Park museum and Pioneer Monument.

Both a source of settler pride and an example of hubris, the Donner Party ordeal is Truckee's most famous historical event. In 1846, a group of settlers from Illinois, originally known as the Donner-Reed Party but now usually referred to as the Donner Party, became snowbound in early fall as a result of several trail mishaps, poor decision-making, and an early onset of winter that year. Choosing multiple times to take shortcuts to save distance compared to the traditional Oregon Trail, coupled with infighting, a disastrous crossing of the Utah salt flats, and the attempt to use the pass near the Truckee River (now Donner Pass) all caused delays in their journey.
